By the summer of 2011 travellers on the train to Malaga airport will arrive in the new train station underneath the main airport building. The new train station is also designed to receive high speed trains arriving from other Spanish cities as well as a double train track all the way to Marbella.
Until then train travellers arriving at the airport from Fuengirola train station or going to Fuengirola from Malaga airport have to use the present train stop which is totally obsolete and difficult to access for older passengers pulling heavy suitcases and impossible for wheelchair users.
Some of the intermediate train stops like the Los Boliches train in Fuengirola have been adapted for use by wheelchair users and can be accessed easily.
Due to the airport expansion construction work the suburban railway platform must be accessed from inside the new car park on the departures level opposite the T2 check-in hall. Take the lift from arrivals to the first floor departures level. Walk out of the building from departures, turn right and walk for about 200 metres until you see the brown Trains sign over the pedestrian entrane to the new parking garage. Walk through the car park and you will pick up the top of the ramp to the Train stop.
Malaga airport train platform is about 300 metres from the airport building reached by a pedestrian ramp. Buy your ticket from the vending machine before climbing up to the platform.
The Malaga Airport train stop is one of the stops between Malaga train station and Fuengirola. Trains leave Malaga and Fuengirola stations in opposite directions every every 30 minutes.
The access to the platform on the far side has been closed during construction work so all passengers travelling from the airport to Malaga and to Fuengirola leave from the platform on the airport side.
Below you see passengers getting onto the train. They have just made their way up the steps on the left of the picture. A lot is changing at the Malaga airport train stops but this obstacle still remains (15/08/10) and probably will be there until the super new train station opens under the airport.
Buy your tickets at the automatic ticket dispenser shown below so keep a few coins for the machine. A return ticket is always cheaper than two singles. In the background on the right you can just see the BP gas station, very well situated for when you are returning your hire car to Malaga airport
